Sleeping Giants (8 Photos)

Two photos: the moss-covered Mud Maid asleep on the woodland floor at Heligan, beside Ella & Pitr's black-and-white giant with round glasses curled up asleep around a white corner house in Stavanger as two people walk past.

Sleeping giants, out cold

Moss on a forest floor in Cornwall, a factory roof outside Stavanger, a whole gable in Riga. Each one holds a giant who has stopped for a nap, and every one of them is too big to wake by tapping on the shoulder.

Two photos of the Mud Maid at Heligan: a sleeping woman lying on the woodland floor with a body of moss and a tuft of grass for hair, shown green in summer and covered in snow in winter.

She lies on her side by the Woodland Walk at Heligan, eyes shut, a clump of grass for hair. Moss and ivy grow and fade on her through the year, so she looks different every season. Top: summer. Bottom: the same nap under snow.

๐Ÿ’ก Name Fact: She was first planned as a mermaid. According to My Modern Metโ€™s Spanish edition, the tail was dropped after someone on the restoration team called her a โ€œmud maid.โ€

Nikolaj Arndtโ€™s 3D pavement painting of Gulliver lying on the paving in Wilhelmshaven, tied to the ground with thin ropes, a small table beside him and his red hat on the paving.

๐Ÿ“š Gulliverโ€™s Travels โ€” By Nikolaj Arndt in Wilhelmshaven, Germany ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช

Arndt painted Gulliver flat on the paving of Valoisplatz, pinned down with thin ropes, his hat rolled off to one side. This is the moment just after the nap. From the right spot, the ropes and the table look as solid as the people walking around him.

๐Ÿ’ก Book Fact: In Jonathan Swiftโ€™s 1726 satire, Gulliver falls asleep on the shore of Lilliput and wakes up tied to the ground by people six inches tall. Britannicaโ€™s guide to the book covers how it began as political satire.

El Decertor's mural in Imbabura, Ecuador: a child asleep on a white pillow with a stuffed toy at the end of a long wall, with a real green hedge growing in front of it as the blanket.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ A Hedge for a Blanket โ€” By El Decertor in Imbabura, Ecuador ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡จ

El Decertor painted the sleeping child, the white pillow and a small stuffed toy at the end of a long wall. The blanket is the real hedge in front of it, so it keeps growing with the seasons. He painted it in Imbabura for the Numu Festival.

๐Ÿ’ก Artist Fact: Decertor is Daniel Cortez from Lima, Peru. Gateways to Newark describes his public murals as โ€œweatherproof memories.โ€

Thomas Damboโ€™s wooden troll Marwin lying on his back beneath an oak at Bickelhaupt Arboretum in Clinton, Iowa, arms stretched out and his huge wooden feet in the foreground.

๐ŸŒณ Marwin โ€” By Thomas Dambo in Clinton, Iowa, USA ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

Flat on his back in the shade of an old oak at Bickelhaupt Arboretum, feet up, arms out. Children climb around his hands and he does not stir. Dambo told Eastern Iowa Community Colleges the old oak stood out to him, so he asked if one of his trolls could โ€œtake a little nap up against that tree.โ€

๐Ÿ’ก Troll Fact: Marwin is one of three troll brothers in Damboโ€™s The Tree Thieves. Local partners spell his name Marvin; the artistโ€™s page uses Marwin.

Pie miera by Thobek in Riga: a sleeping child painted in one corner of a tall gable, head on a pillow above a blue sheet, with huge folds of beige blanket filling the rest of the wall.

๐Ÿ’ค Pie miera โ€” By Thobek in Riga, Latvia ๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡ป

The sleeper only gets one corner of the wall. The rest of the gable at Tilta iela 20 is blanket, folded and bunched as if the child has been tossing all night. Diena names it โ€œPie mieraโ€ by ฤ’riks Caune, known as Thobek, painted for Riga Street Art Month.

๐Ÿ’ก Color Fact: Diena reports that the palette was taken from the buildingโ€™s own facade colors, so the mural fits the house. Thobek says painting it took five days.

Aerial view of Ella & Pitrโ€™s Lilith and Olaf: a giant gray-and-white woman curled up asleep across an entire factory roof near Stavanger, surrounded by parking lots, stacked lumber and smaller buildings.

๐Ÿ›Œ Lilith and Olaf โ€” By Ella & Pitr in Klepp, Norway ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ด

From the ground it is just a roof. From the air, a woman lies curled up across the whole of it, asleep, with a tiny figure dangling from her fingers. Ella & Pitr painted her for Nuart 2015 on the 21,000 mยฒ roof of the Block Berge Bygg building in Klepp, on the outskirts of Stavanger, and finished it in four days.

๐Ÿ’ก King Fact: The small figure is King Olaf I of Norway. Laughing Squid called it the worldโ€™s largest outdoor rooftop mural when it was unveiled.

In Stavanger itself, another Ella & Pitr giant had to fold himself around a wooden house: knees up, cheek on his sleeve, glasses still on. Nuart describes the work as a diptych on two homes about 100 meters apart in the Storhaug district, a male and a female giant squeezed to fit the walls.

Sen 2 by Lejsek in Liberec: a giant grayscale figure asleep along the whole side of the Gym Arena building, head resting at the left, body fading into smoke, with parked cars below.

๐ŸŒซ๏ธ Sen 2 โ€” By Lejsek in Liberec, Czech Republic ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฟ

The head rests at the far left of the wall and the rest of the sleeper drifts off into smoke, longer than the row of cars parked under it. Lejsek calls it โ€œSen 2โ€, Czech for โ€œDream 2,โ€ his second mural in Liberecโ€™s Kunratice district, on the Gym Arena building at Olbrachtova 820/4.

    1. If it’s Thomas Dambo’s trolls you love, there are plenty more out there: by July 2025 he and his team had built 170 of them in 20 countries, all from recycled and reclaimed wood, often with help from local volunteers. The very first, “Hector the Protector,” went up on Culebra, Puerto Rico, in 2014, and after Hurricane Maria destroyed it in 2017 he built a second Hector in 2019. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Dambo
