When Sculptures Come Alive (8 Photos vol. 6)

Eight sculptures with body language
Sometimes a pose is all a sculpture needs: a tilted head, a hand on a bench, a cabinet leaning over its smaller companions. The eight works here are made of willow, sand, wood, bronze, straw and trash, from a willow archer drawing her bow to a wooden giant crouching by a pond in Kentucky.

🏹 Willow Huntress — By Anna & The Willow
A woven willow archer draws her bow beside a woodland path, and her long willow dress spreads across the ground behind her.
💡 Place Fact: Anna Cross, who works as Anna & The Willow, also made The Spirit of the Medieval Hunter, a willow figure for the Woodland Trust at Skipton Castle Woods in England. Skipton Castle once used the wood mainly for hunting and fishing.

🦭 Straw Walrus — Wara Art Festival, Niigata, Japan 🇯🇵
With its head lowered and whiskers sticking out, this enormous walrus looks as though it has just noticed its small visitor. It appeared at the 2016 Wara Art Festival in Uwasekigata Park in Niigata, Japan, where Musashino Art University students design the giant straw animals and local artisans build them.

🐒 Barbary Baby and Mom Monkey — By Bordalo II in Viseu, Portugal 🇵🇹
A large monkey holds a smaller one close on a building wall in Viseu, Portugal, both staring out with big round eyes. Bordalo II built Barbary Baby and Mom Monkey from discarded objects, like the rest of his Big Trash Animals.

🐘 Resting Sand Elephant — By Andoni Bastarrika
A sand elephant lies on the beach with its legs folded and its trunk curled up, mouth open, while a man leans back against its body. The wrinkled skin, the big ear and the tusk are all sand, shaped by Andoni Bastarrika.

🎭 The Grandees — By Philip Jackson
Two bronze figures in wide hats and long cloaks sit on a bench in front of a stone wall. One turns a golden mask toward us; the other faces away. This is Philip Jackson’s The Grandees.
💡 Artist Fact: Jackson is also behind some of London’s best-known public statues, including the Bomber Command Memorial in Green Park, unveiled in 2012, and the Gandhi statue in Parliament Square, unveiled in 2015.

🪵 Little Nis — By Thomas Dambo in Clermont, Kentucky, USA 🇺🇸
Little Nis crouches at the edge of a snowy pond with his head down and his big hands on the ground, and the still water reflects him. He is one of Thomas Dambo’s Forest Giants at Bernheim in Kentucky, built from recycled wood.
💡 Material Fact: The wood for Little Nis and his family included storm debris, bourbon barrel staves and scrap from the Louisville Slugger bat factory. Bernheim expected the giants to last about three years, weather permitting.
