Look up, then look down
A painted hippo comes crashing through a white wall in a Stockton-on-Tees yard, jaws first. The surprises in these eight works come in very different sizes, and one is small enough to step over.

🌲 “Jeppe Væktæppe” — By Thomas Dambo near Voldum, Denmark 🇩🇰
A wooden giant crouches between the trees, and the two children standing by its hand show just how big it is. Thomas Dambo made Jeppe Væktæppe near Voldum, close to Aarhus. Dambo says the idea came from playing peekaboo with his toddler twins, which makes this forest encounter feel a little less alarming.

🐏 “Big Merino Ram” — By Matt Sloane in Richmond, Tasmania, Australia 🇦🇺
From a distance, it is a ram standing in a field. Up close, the fleece becomes a coat of metal parts, with different patterns across the face and body. Matt Sloane’s life-sized scrap metal merino keeps watch by the gate at Richmond Park Estate, 7 Morgan Street, Richmond. Even the curled horns are pieced together from scrap.
💡 Artwork Fact: Sloane built the ram from scrap gathered where Richmond Park’s original homestead burned down, including a Lux oven door and a Hobart Foundry toilet cistern. Its ear tag is engraved 1823, the year of the farm’s original land grant.

🎈 Seth and the Balloon — By David Zinn
The biggest surprise here might be the smallest. A raccoon in shorts waits on the curb with a pink balloon and a tiny beetle. David Zinn introduced Seth as someone offering balloon rides to beetles. It is a whole little business, tucked into one corner of the sidewalk.

🦛 Hippo — By Joe Hill in Stockton-on-Tees, England, UK 🇬🇧
The mouth is wide open, the white wall seems to have shattered, and a hippo is coming straight into the yard. Joe Hill, of 3D Joe and Max, painted this illusion in Ship Inn Yard, near West Row. Stockton BID commissioned it to brighten the town’s yards and alleys, and the hippo is a nod to a fossil tooth found near Stockton in 1958. The real brickwork above makes the escape even better.
💡 Artist Fact: The “Max” in 3D Joe and Max was Joe Hill’s partner Max Lowry, who died in 2010. The following year Hill painted what Guinness World Records listed as the largest and longest 3D painting, at Canary Wharf in London.

🪨 “Colos Chaos” — By Jon Foreman and Layla Parkin at Freshwater West, Wales, UK 🇬🇧
Pale stones fill the center, pink stones gather around them, and dark blue-gray stones make the outer edge. Jon Foreman and Layla Parkin created Colos Chaos in 2025 at Freshwater West in Pembrokeshire. The pebbles stand on their sides in dense rows, almost like something woven.
💡 Place Fact: Freshwater West was a filming location for the last two Harry Potter films. Shell Cottage was built at the foot of its dunes and removed after filming, but Dobby’s grave was allowed to stay on the beach.

🦋 “La Petite Guerrière” — By Snek in Saint-Martin-d’Hères, France 🇫🇷
Orange butterflies crowd around a pale face, while a robin flies across the wall beside it. Gold-colored cracks run over the face like repairs in porcelain. Snek painted it on a house wall at 15 Rue Beethoven during Street Art Fest Grenoble-Alpes in June 2026. The wall is busy, but the closed eyes keep it calm.

☁️ “Horizons” — By Neil Dawson at Gibbs Farm, New Zealand 🇳🇿
It looks like a loose sheet caught by the wind, or a drawing floating above the hill. Neil Dawson’s Horizons, from 1994, is actually welded and painted steel, measuring 15 meters high. The cattle below give away the real scale.

🎃 “Pumpkin” — By Yayoi Kusama on Naoshima, Japan 🇯🇵
A yellow pumpkin sits at the edge of the sea, covered in rows of black dots that follow its curves. Yayoi Kusama made Pumpkin in 1994 for an old pier on Naoshima, near Benesse House Museum, as the first of her pumpkins designed to stand outdoors. Typhoon Lupit swept it into the sea in 2021, and a remade version returned to the same spot in October 2022.
💡 Artist Fact: Kusama was born in 1929 in Matsumoto, where her family ran a plant nursery with its own seed farm. She later recalled that when she first picked a pumpkin from its vine as a child, “it immediately began speaking to me.”

WOW MAGNIFICENT
Only God can save except it’s your angle
It isn’t a camera-angle trick—Jeppe Væktæppe is a real giant wooden troll that Thomas Dambo built in the forest near Voldum, Denmark, and the two children beside its hand show its true size. Dambo’s own page about the work is linked under the photo.
Praise God. Super art. My heart love it is in the morning time to see.
Beautiful and intricate it also looks like it’s a natural thing xxx
