When plants become part of the picture

Only one part of a portrait by Fábio Gomes Trindade keeps growing: the girl’s hair, which is a real tree. Elsewhere in this collection, the greenery is sometimes alive and sometimes just paint.

🌿 True Nature — By Daniel Popper in Cancún, Mexico 🇲🇽

The figure holds its face between two enormous hands, revealing a garden inside its head. Leaves spill through the opening and gather around its shoulders, with the sea visible beyond. The detached face keeps its eyes closed.

💡 Nerd Fact: The 2023 sculpture stands in Bohemian Square in Cancún. Made in partnership with Grupo Rosanegra from a steel subframe and glass-fiber reinforced concrete, it is a reinvention of an earlier piece of his. Popper’s description pairs it with one of his favorite quotes: “Your true self is not something you need to find; it is something you need to remember.”

🌱 Planting the Future — By Rogue One in Glasgow, Scotland, UK 🇬🇧

A child in a yellow jacket tends the ground beneath a tree that reaches up the building. Real windows sit within its painted trunk. The wall at 11 Kilbeg Terrace was painted for Glen Oaks Housing Association in Arden and unveiled in November 2025. More than 200 tenants helped shape the design, which reflects growth, change and resilience.

🌳 Green Crown — By Fábio Gomes Trindade in Trindade, Brazil 🇧🇷

The painted girl smiles from a pink wall, and her orange headband sits exactly where the paint meets the real branches. Her yellow shirt and the bright wall keep her face easy to find beneath all that green.

🦌 Moss Deer — By Carly Schmitt

This deer is made from moss, with thin legs and branching antlers traced across a white wall. Part of its body disappears behind a gray shutter. Up close, the moss is rough and uneven, and a few real weeds grow at its feet where the wall meets the cobblestones.

💡 Artist Fact: Schmitt holds a B.A. from Macalester College and an M.F.A. from the Bauhaus University in Weimar, Germany, and received an Alexander von Humboldt German Chancellor Fellowship. As founder of Artist @ Large, she runs large-scale public art and community projects.

💐 Flowers for the Ride — By David Zinn in Michigan, USA 🇺🇸

Hamish McFeeney arrives on a green, bug-eyed creature with a bouquet in each hand. A real garden stone supplies the top of his tall hat, and pink flowers grow just behind him. It is quite an entrance for someone so small.

💡 Sidewalk Fact: Zinn has been creating artwork in and around Ann Arbor since 1987. His street drawings are always improvised on location, and they have turned up as far away as beaches in California, village squares in Sweden and street corners in Taiwan.

🍂 Colos Curva — By Jon Foreman in Little Milford Woods, Wales, UK 🇬🇧

Yellow, orange and green leaf fragments form a pointed oval around a dark center, edged in red. The trunk looks as if it has split open. In his own post for the work, Foreman explains that nothing was carved: the hollow is built up with clay, with dark earth for the shadowed parts, in Little Milford Woods in Pembrokeshire.

💙 Floral Gaze — By Drapl and Strange Harvest in Brisbane, Australia 🇦🇺

Here, every flower is paint. Blue blossoms gather in a woman’s hair, backed by a large flower-shaped pattern that spreads across the brickwork. The peeling surface shows through the paint, even on her cheek.

🌺 The Healer — By Drapl and Luvsic in Roskilde, Denmark 🇩🇰

A face with closed eyes sits between blue flowers and a cluster of peach-colored hibiscus. Blue butterflies, big leaves and pink-and-blue zigzags spread across the dark wall. In their collaboration post, the artists named it “The Healer” and described it as an ovation to healers and the healing process. It was painted for Piece for Peace through RF Graff at Roskilde Festival.
