🐉 In Which Nadine Amuses a Dragon and Makes Autumn Happen — By David Zinn

A little green dragon lies on its back while Nadine watches from the pavement. In Zinn’s drawing, shared in October 2022, the orange leaves are real. He has placed the dragon’s open mouth at their edge, so it appears to breathe fallen leaves.

💡 Nerd Fact: Before his pavement drawings became widely known, Zinn spent more than twenty years working for commercial clients. His commissions included theatrical posters, educational cartoons and hand-painted dump trucks, according to his artist biography. His temporary street drawings use chalk, charcoal and found objects and are improvised on location.

🌀 Dissipatio — By Jon Foreman and Layla Parkin at Colby Woods, Wales, UK 🇬🇧

A yellow leaf spiral breaks into smaller fragments across the dark earth, blending into the surrounding leaf litter. Jon Foreman and Layla Parkin made Dissipatio in 2024 at Colby Woods.

🍁 Lapis Folium — By Jon Foreman near Dale, Wales, UK 🇬🇧

Russet-red stones stand on edge to form an enormous pointed leaf on the sand. Jon Foreman created Lapis Folium in 2025 on the beach of the Gann Estuary near Dale, using larger stones along the sides and smaller pieces through the center.

🌳 Twister — By Jon Foreman at Little Milford Woods, Wales, UK 🇬🇧

Bands of leaves climb around the trunk, changing from green near the roots to yellow and orange above. Jon Foreman created Twister at Little Milford Woods in November 2024, using clay to hold the leaves in place. Foreman later reported that the work had already disappeared.

💡 Nerd Fact: Yellow and orange pigments can already be present in leaves while they still look green. As chlorophyll breaks down in autumn, these pigments become visible. Trees also recover valuable chemicals from their leaves before shedding them, as explained by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

🐿️ Autumn Companions — By Curtis Hylton in Oskarshamn, Sweden 🇸🇪

A robin sits inside the sweep of an enormous squirrel’s tail. Curtis Hylton painted Autumn Companions in 2022 at Kungsgatan 11–15 in Oskarshamn. As the city’s street art guide explains, British stories about birds and squirrels inspired the pairing, while the cones and yellow leaves around the squirrel’s neck draw on the local surroundings.

💃 Dos Gardenias — By LEÓN in Barcelona, Spain 🇪🇸

An older couple dances with red blindfolds over their eyes, surrounded by painted brown leaves on Carrer de l’Allada-Vermell in Barcelona. Although the fallen leaves suggest autumn, LEÓN describes Dos Gardenias as winter giving way to spring and a celebration of the present at any age. The red dress and bow tie stand out against the yellow wall, while real leaves lie on the pavement below.

💡 Nerd Fact: Dos Gardenias is also the title of a Cuban bolero composed by pianist Isolina Carrillo. According to PBS’s Buena Vista Social Club song notes, Ibrahim Ferrer learned the song while performing with Beny Moré in the 1950s, decades before recording it with Buena Vista Social Club.

🍂 Golden Leaf Circles — By James Brunt

Yellow leaves form concentric rings inside a border of arranged twigs, with moss-covered stones framing the pattern. In an interview about his process, Brunt explains that he works with what he finds on the day, building geometric patterns through repetition.

🍁 Autumnal Melting — By AÉRO in Pléchâtel, France 🇫🇷

Copper curls and pale leaves sweep around a woman’s face, while dark trees cross her shoulders. AÉRO painted Autumnal Melting at Cap Koad on Rue de Lanserva in Pléchâtel, near Bain-de-Bretagne. The venue explains that the title refers both to the portrait merging with nature and to glacier ice melting even in autumn.
