Portuguese muralist and painter Sérgio “Odeith” uses perspective, shadow and anamorphosis to create his 3D illusions. He paints one distorted image across 90-degree corners, walls, floors and other surfaces. From the intended viewpoint, the painted sections line up as one three-dimensional scene.

💡 Name Fact: When asked where his tag came from, Odeith said it sounds like the Portuguese phrase odeio-te, meaning “I hate you.”

🐝 “Mimic Wasp” — By Odeith

The mural is signed “Odeith 2021” and shows a giant wasp hovering inside a derelict room. Odeith’s own front-and-side comparison shows what the painting looks like outside the intended viewpoint. The artist seated beneath it makes the mural’s scale clear.

🚌 Wrecked Bus Illusion — By Odeith in Vila Franca de Xira, Portugal 🇵🇹

Odeith posted the finished work on August 12, 2019. The bus is painted on a concrete block at an abandoned factory in Vila Franca de Xira. MAGG reported that the work took approximately ten hours and around 30 spray cans. His official time-lapse shows the process.

🚗 “Classic Day” — By Odeith

Odeith called the work “Classic day” in a July 2020 post. From one viewpoint, the anamorphic painting makes a battered concrete block look like a black Rolls-Royce. The before-and-after photos show how the car is stretched across the structure.

🐓 “Big Rooster” — By Odeith in Sintra, Portugal 🇵🇹

💡 Nerd Fact: In Portugal, a rooster can also bring to mind the Galo de Barcelos. Its legend tells of a roasted cockerel crowing as an innocent pilgrim was being hanged. The colorful bird was later used for many years as a symbol of Portuguese tourism.

🐦 “Bird Hole” — By Odeith

In a May 2020 video, Odeith calls this work Bird Hole, an anamorphic spray painting made in an abandoned place. The bird appears to push through the old wall. Odeith sits beside its beak, showing how large the painting is.

🪲 “Touching Earth” — By Odeith in Portugal 🇵🇹

Odeith called this one-day dome painting Touching Earth in a June 2019 post. He used the rounded concrete dome in Portugal as the beetle’s shell, with its legs and antennae continuing across the surrounding walls.

🐸 Super Distorted Frog — By Odeith

In a July 2019 post, Odeith called it a “super distorted frog.” He said the challenge was marking the outline without damaging the old wall texture or using a projector. The blue frog is stretched across the old wall, lining up only from the intended viewpoint.

🚆 Abandoned Train Carriage — By Odeith

In a July 2020 post, Odeith showed how the box-shaped structure and adjoining wall line up as a weathered train carriage. Existing graffiti by his longtime painting friend Roteweiller fit the far end. Odeith’s process video shows him painting the illusion across both surfaces.

💡 Nerd Fact: Odeith’s MURO festival biography says his first experiments were in the street and on train tracks. Opportunities to paint large murals followed soon after.
