🔔 Girl with a Pierced Eardrum — By Banksy in Bristol, England 🇬🇧

Banksy’s 2014 mural reworks Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring on a building in Hanover Place beside Albion Dockyard. The wall’s existing yellow alarm box becomes the earring, turning part of the architecture into the punchline. See the Visit Bristol record and find it on Google Maps.

💡 Nerd Fact: Vermeer’s painting was not a commissioned portrait but a tronie—a study of an imagined character type. The Mauritshuis catalog also notes that the “pearl” is too large to be real and was probably an imitation. Vermeer suggested it with only a few brushstrokes, and no hook is visible.

🏚️ Dear Old Thing — By GRAFFMATT in Bristol, England 🇬🇧

A weathered old car carries a ramshackle flying house assembled from rooms, pipes, wings, and a windmill. GRAFFMATT painted Dear Old Thing for Upfest 2026, taking its title and inspiration from the neighboring antique shop. 🎨 CMYK Mural — By ACHES in Bristol, England 🇬🇧

ACHES painted this four-layer portrait at 274 North Street for Upfest 2022. His festival post documents the mural; Inspiring City records that the model was a friend wearing a Shelbourne FC jersey and that ACHES dedicated the mural to his late Auntie Leone. Upfest’s 2026 update places Audrey Kawasaki’s Not So Soft on the same wall, so this photograph documents the 2022 version.

🎻 Rupert Engledow — By Liam Bononi in Bristol, England 🇬🇧

Deep red shadows cut through the face, hands, and clothing of violinist Rupert Engledow. Art UK catalogs the 2024 work as Rupert Engledow at 83 Lime Road; Bristol24/7 reports that Bononi had seen Engledow performing in York and later translated that memory into this Upfest mural.

🔴 DREAM 🔵 — By INSANE 51 in Bristol, England 🇬🇧

INSANE 51 painted DREAM on the Tobacco Factory’s large North Street wall for Upfest’s 75 Walls project in 2021. The artist’s original Instagram post shows the completed mural and its filtered views. The overlapping red-and-blue image depicts Nyx holding Selene: a blue lens isolates the portrait, while a red lens reveals the skeleton beneath. The Tobacco Factory wall has since hosted other murals, so this photograph records the 2021 work; Bristol24/7 documented one later repaint.

💡 Nerd Fact: In Greek mythology, Nyx personified night and Selene personified the moon. The Metropolitan Museum of Art notes that Athenian vase painters used these deities to signal that a scene took place at night.

🦜 Parrot Wall — By Curtis Hylton in Bristol, England 🇬🇧

A giant yellow-and-orange parrot, its feathers merging into flowers and leaves, filled the tall gable beside Jan’s Barber at 135 East Street. Curtis Hylton painted it for Upfest 2022 in the flora-and-fauna style documented on his official website. 🦊 ROA’s Nelson Street Fox — By ROA in Bristol, England 🇬🇧

ROA painted this huge black-and-white fox on Nelson Street for See No Evil 2012. The Guardian documented the city fox during the festival, while Upfest’s project archive places it within the wider transformation of the street. Nelson Street later underwent demolition and redevelopment; Bristol24/7 documented the loss of See No Evil-covered buildings in 2014. This photograph records the 2012 work.
