Leonard Cohen watches over Montréal. Amy Winehouse fills a Camden wall. Daft Punk, Bob Marley, Freddie Mercury and Jimi Hendrix appear in alleys and across huge facades. Here are ten street-art tributes to music.

🎙️ “Tower of Songs” — By EL MAC and Gene Pendon in Montréal, Canada 🇨🇦

Leonard Cohen looks down from 1420 Crescent Street with one hand over his heart. Tourisme Montréal identifies the 2017 work as Tower of Songs, a monumental tribute by American portrait artist EL MAC and Montréal artist Gene Pendon.

💡 City Fact: Tower of Songs was MU’s 100th mural and was unveiled during the week of events commemorating Cohen’s death.

🎤 Amy Winehouse — By JXC in Camden Town, London, UK 🇬🇧

Amy Winehouse reclines across the brick wall, with her beehive, eyeliner and tattoos. JXC painted the mural in 2021 in an alley behind The Hawley Arms on Castlehaven Road, a Camden pub she frequented and briefly worked at. BA Street Art documents it as a tribute marking the tenth anniversary of Winehouse’s death.

💡 Nerd Fact: Camden had another public memorial before JXC painted this wall: Scott Eaton’s bronze statue at Stables Market was unveiled on 14 September 2014, which would have been Winehouse’s 31st birthday.

🎵 Bob Marley Tribute — By JEKS ONE in St. Petersburg, Florida, USA 🇺🇸

Bob Marley’s grayscale portrait sits inside huge white letters spelling RISE UP. The glowing ember is the work’s only warm color. JEKS ONE painted it at Vinoy Park for Reggae Rise Up Florida in March 2022. In his post, the artist called it one of the best events he had ever painted at.

💡 Nerd Fact: Bob Marley never won a Grammy during his lifetime; the Recording Academy honored him posthumously with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001.

🤖 “The End” — By Pieksa in Kraków, Poland 🇵🇱

Daft Punk’s chrome helmets lean together in The End. Pieksa’s official portfolio records the Kraków work in 2021, shortly after the duo announced their split. The artist described it as an appreciation piece for the feelings their music had created. It was painted at Legal Graffiti Park on Ślusarska Street, so the map marks its historic site rather than a permanent installation.

💡 Nerd Fact: The eight-minute Epilogue video used to announce Daft Punk’s split was excerpted from their 2006 film Electroma.

🎼 Freddie Mercury — By Oriol Arumí in Almacelles, Spain 🇪🇸

Freddie Mercury wears headphones and sings into a studio microphone. Completed in March 2021 at Carrer de la Bassa del Molí 38, the town-commissioned mural marked the 30th anniversary of Mercury’s death. Oriol Arumí thanked Sam and Isabel for helping with the work. It also carries the opening notes and lyrics of Bohemian Rhapsody.

💡 Nerd Fact: Queen assembled the choral passages of Bohemian Rhapsody from hundreds of vocal overdubs, and the two-inch tape eventually became translucent from repeated use.
