Some ideas refuse to stay normal-sized
A paint tube, a safety pin, a box of pencils and a park bench all become much harder to ignore when artists enlarge them beyond reason.

🚿 “The Legend of Giants” — By Natalia Rak in Bialystok, Poland 🇵🇱
The girl and her watering can fill the wall. A real tree stands directly below, right where the water would land. Rak painted the four-story mural in seven days in 2013 for the Folk on the Street festival, building it around a tree that had to be preserved. It is at al. Józefa Piłsudskiego 11/4 in Białystok.

📦 “Home Sweet Home” — By Nego in Torrellas, Zaragoza, Spain 🇪🇸
The whole house becomes a cardboard parcel. The orange cat tearing through the front makes it look as if something very large has just arrived. Nego, a graffiti artist from Salamanca, painted it in 2017 for the village’s Arte en la Calle contest, where 14 proposals competed for three facades offered by residents, who then voted on the prizes. The piece took second place. It is at Calle Constitución 6 in Torrellas.

📚 “From Russia with Love” — By Jan Is De Man in Solnechnodolsk, Russia 🇷🇺
Windows and balconies become shelves in a cabinet several stories high. The remaining windows sharpen the illusion that the whole facade has become furniture. Jan Is De Man painted it in 2021 as a Russian version of his bookshelf mural, with the books chosen together with local residents, in collaboration with the Urban Morphogenesis Festival.
💡 Project Fact: The bookshelf idea began in Utrecht, where Jan asked residents to name a book that makes them smile, with only two rules: no political and no religious books. The Utrecht shelf ended up featuring eight languages and cultures.

✏️ “Colour Pencils” — By Jonna Pohjalainen at Pedvale Art Park, Latvia 🇱🇻
The trunks keep their bark, but their ends have been sharpened and painted. Now the clearing looks like somebody dropped a box of pencils. Pohjalainen, an artist from Helsinki, carved them from fallen local aspen trees in 2006 during an environmental art workshop at the Pedvale Open-Air Art Museum.

🎯 “Schleudersitz” — By Cornelia Konrads in Eining, Germany 🇩🇪
Red straps tie a park bench to a forked trunk, turning the seat into the pouch of a giant slingshot. Sitting down looks like a risky decision. Konrads made the piece in 2010 for the Flying Objects exhibition in Neustadt an der Donau, and Sculpture Network describes the bench as ready to be shot right across the Danube Valley.

🌼 Marigold Paint Tube — Boulogne-sur-Mer, France 🇫🇷
A paint tube has landed on the grass at impossible scale. The orange marigolds complete the joke: the tube appears to squeeze color straight into the garden. Photographer Steve Hughes came across it in a public park in Boulogne-sur-Mer, alongside a large picture frame filled with flowers.

🧱 “Diego le robot” — By Näutil in Saint-Pierre-Église, France 🇫🇷
A block of concrete becomes the head of a yellow toy figure. The two openings in the bunker were already there; painted around, they turn into blocky eyes above a simple smile. Näutil painted it in 2017 with the caption “Fils de géant ! Va ranger tes jouets” — roughly, “Son of a giant! Go put your toys away.”
💡 Artist Fact: Näutil was born in 1976 into a seafaring family and came to graffiti through skateboarding and surfing, painting his first pieces on the sides of blockhauses before moving to Paris in the late 1990s. He files his landscape work under the initials LSD, for LandScapeDiversion.

🧷 “Corridor Pin, Blue” — By Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen in San Francisco, USA 🇺🇸
A safety pin, tall enough to walk under, arches across the path. The 1999 sculpture, made of stainless steel and aluminum and about 21 feet tall, belongs to the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and stands outdoors at the de Young museum in Golden Gate Park.
💡 Artist Fact: Coosje van Bruggen, born in Groningen in 1942, worked at Amsterdam’s Stedelijk Museum before she began collaborating with Claes Oldenburg in 1976. The two married in 1977 and spent three decades on monumental works she called Large-Scale Projects.
