Nine double takes and the artists behind them
None of these came with a sign explaining itself. In Gdynia, a kid seems to dangle from an underpass ceiling; in Orvault, a park bench stares back with E.T.’s eyes. Below, each one gets its answer: who made it and where.

🌅 “Morning is Broken” — By Banksy in Herne Bay, England 🇬🇧
A boy, with a cat at his side, pulls the corrugated-metal sheets over a farmhouse window apart like bedroom curtains. On a boarded-up house, it reads as the first morning in years.
💡 Nerd Fact: Banksy confirmed the work on Instagram on March 15, 2023, but demolition of the derelict house at Blacksole Farm had begun the day before. The contractors said they had not known it was a Banksy.

🎯 “Schleudersitz” — By Cornelia Konrads in Neustadt an der Donau, Germany 🇩🇪
A park bench hangs in a red strap pulled back across a forked tree trunk, ready to be fired. The title is German for “ejection seat”; Konrads dates the work to 2010.
💡 Nerd Fact: Sculpture Network lists it under Flying Objects, an art exhibition on a former vineyard in Neustadt an der Donau that is now a leisure park overlooking the Danube valley. So the bench is aimed at the view.

🧗 A Child on the Ledge — By Marek LOONEY Rybowski in Gdynia, Poland 🇵🇱
A painted boy grips the real concrete edge of an underpass and hangs there in red sneakers while a butterfly drifts past. It is one section of a longer mural that runs through the pedestrian underpass beneath the bypass, linking the Demptowo and Pustki Cisowskie districts of Gdynia.
💡 Nerd Fact: The City of Gdynia says residents chose the mural in the participatory budget, with more than 2,700 votes; the same project also paid for a public defibrillator and an outdoor gym.
