A Delicate Balance (10 Photos)

Balanced beach stones beside a bronze figure reaching over the Mediterranean.

🎨 Cover: artworks by Eduardo Relero and Nicolas Lavarenne.

A chain, a chair back, a pile of books

These figures have very little to stand on. Artists turn chains and ivy into narrow paths, stack chairs beneath a mural and send a figure stepping out over the sea. Eduardo Relero’s broken bridge starts the collection with a particularly unreliable-looking crossing.

Nicolas Lavarenne’s sculpted figure extends one leg over the sea while the other foot rests on a stone ledge in Antibes.

🌊 “Le Défi” — By Nicolas Lavarenne in Antibes, France 🇫🇷

One foot stays on the stone; the other reaches out over the Mediterranean. Lavarenne’s sculpted figure stretches its arms behind it, holding the instant before a step. The city of Antibes records its acquisition of Le Défi in 2023.

💡 Artist Fact: Lavarenne had no art training. According to a WIPO Magazine profile, he studied mechanical design and worked in the motorcycle industry for a few years before turning to sculpture.

A woman in a blue dress balances on tilted wooden chairs in Sasha Korban’s mural on a weathered building in Tbilisi.

🪑 Finding a Good Balance — By Sasha Korban in Tbilisi, Georgia 🇬🇪

One foot rests on a chair back; the other reaches across the pile. Korban’s woman stretches out her arms above chairs tipped in almost every direction. The peeling facade makes the stack look no more dependable.

💡 Artist Fact: Korban came to murals from underground. He worked in the Komsomolets Donbasu coal mine in eastern Ukraine from 2006 to 2011.

A tiny woman in pink holds an umbrella above a real metal chain attached to a wall, in street art by OakOak.

🎪 Chain Tightrope — By OakOak in France 🇫🇷

The chain is real. The little woman at its far end is painted, right where the links meet the wall. Her pink umbrella and outstretched arm turn a barrier into a tiny tightrope act.

A child stands on tiptoe on a stack of books to look over a painted wall in Edoardo Ettorre’s mural in Gurjaani.

📚 “Concrete Horizons” — By Edoardo Ettorre in Gurjaani, Georgia 🇬🇪

A stack of books gives this child just enough height to look over the wall. The child rises onto tiptoe, while the building’s real windows remain visible within the painted wall. ANSA identifies the Gurjaani mural as Concrete Horizons.

Tiny painted Calvin and Hobbes figures follow a real ivy stem across a pale wall beside a metal shutter.

🌿 Calvin and Hobbes Take a Walk — By OakOak

A real ivy stem supplies the path for Calvin and Hobbes. OakOak places the pair among the leaves, with Hobbes’s arms spread as they follow its curve. Leave a plant alone long enough and it may acquire pedestrians.

Three Red Cross volunteers pose on opposite sides of Eduardo Relero’s painted broken bridge, with a painted cyclist and a deep gorge below.

🌉 The Broken Bridge — By Eduardo Relero

Three Red Cross volunteers kneel beside a gap that exists only in paint. A cyclist hangs over the broken bridge, with water and stone pillars far below. It is still a flat street, though the photograph makes that hard to accept.

💡 Artist Fact: Relero is an Argentinian artist based in Madrid, and his 3D paintings are regularly borrowed for good causes. D+C notes that civil-society organizations have used them in campaigns, including one Amnesty International displayed at the 2019 Hannover Messe.

HIJACK’s painted figure rides a single-wheel device while wearing a headset and using a keyboard on his forearm.

🛞 “The Transhumanist” — By HIJACK

A headset, an exposed brain and a keyboard on the forearm: this rider has plenty to manage above one small wheel. HIJACK gives him a rigid, upright stance. At least his hands are free from the steering.

A sculpture of a figure holding a long balancing pole above the Brda River in Bydgoszcz.

🤸 “Man Crossing the River” — By Jerzy Kędziora in Bydgoszcz, Poland 🇵🇱

A figure balances on a wire above the Brda River, holding a long pole. The sculpture’s carefully placed center of mass helps keep it stable. It was unveiled on May 1, 2004, the day Poland joined the European Union, just across the bridge to Bydgoszcz’s Old Town.
