Sculptures That Take Over the Scene (8 Photos)

By Vidar
Two monumental sculptures: Sendai Daikannon towers above a city street beside the Statue of Unity above a river and bridge.

From a glass runner to a figure above the rooftops

A glass runner in snow, a traveler with an open torso, and a child tucked beneath the paving. These eight sculptures draw attention through movement, scale or details that look too soft to be solid.

🤝 “Nello & Patrasche” — By Batist Vermeulen in Antwerp, Belgium 🇧🇪

A child and dog sleep together beneath a blanket made from the cobblestones of Handschoenmarkt, the square in front of Antwerp’s cathedral. Vermeulen based the work on Ouida’s A Dog of Flanders. Visitors can walk right over them, and since 2022 LED lighting has kept the pair visible at night.

Two photographs show Mouchy’s marble portrait of the Duke of Montausier and a close view of its intricately carved lace neckwear.

🧵 Marble Lace — By Louis-Philippe Mouchy in Paris, France 🇫🇷

The face has plenty of character, but the lace steals the scene. These two views show the fine holes and folds carved into the marble neckwear of Mouchy’s portrait of the Duke of Montausier at the Louvre. The statue is on long-term loan to the museum in Paris from the Institut de France.

💡 Date Fact: The Louvre dates the marble to 1789. It was commissioned in 1781.

A three-photo study of The West Wind shows a marble woman holding windblown drapery and two details of the carved folds.

🌬️ “The West Wind” — By Thomas Ridgeway Gould in Rochester, New York, USA 🇺🇸

One hand gathers the dress while the folds flare around the figure’s legs. The full view and two details make the marble look like fabric caught in a gust. Gould’s The West Wind belongs to the Memorial Art Gallery’s collection in Rochester.

The enormous white Sendai Daikannon towers above cars, a pedestrian, houses and utility lines on a city street.

🏙️ Sendai Daikannon — At Daikanmitsuji Temple in Sendai, Japan 🇯🇵

Cars, houses and a pedestrian give the white figure its scale. Sendai Daikannon rises 100 meters, a height chosen to mark Sendai’s 100th anniversary as a city. It stands in the city’s Izumi Ward.

💡 Place Fact: The statue is hollow and can be entered: an elevator takes visitors up to a viewing window near the top, while levels three through eleven hold 108 Buddhist statues. It was completed in 1991.

Dromeas, the glass-and-iron Runner by Costas Varotsos, appearing to surge forward through heavy snow in Athens.

🏃 “Dromeas” / “The Runner” — By Costas Varotsos in Athens, Greece 🇬🇷

Thousands of glass layers trail behind the 12-meter figure like a wake. Snow sharpens the silhouette. The iron-and-glass work stands in front of the Athens Hilton, on Megalis tou Genous Scholis Square.

💡 History Fact: The work was first installed in August 1988 on the fountain in Omonia Square, under the original title Xenos (“Stranger”), as part of the City of Athens’ “Dromena” art program. After it was destroyed during construction of the Omonia metro station in 1993, Varotsos rebuilt it at its current site in May 1994.

A bronze figure of Christ stands underwater with both arms raised, surrounded by blue water, fish and marine growth.

🌊 “Christ of the Abyss” — By Guido Galletti off Key Largo, Florida, USA 🇺🇸

Raised arms reach toward the surface as fish swim behind the figure. This bronze statue at Key Largo Dry Rocks stands in less than 25 feet of water. Marine growth has made its surface look like part of the reef. It is a cast of Galletti’s 1954 original in San Fruttuoso Bay, Italy, and was secured to the seabed in August 1965, about five miles off Key Largo in John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park.

The Statue of Unity rises above the Narmada River, with a long bridge and tiny visitors showing its scale.

🏞️ “Statue of Unity” — By Ram V. Sutar in Kevadia, Gujarat, India 🇮🇳

The bridge and visitors make the scale easier to grasp than the number alone: Ram V. Sutar’s figure of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel stands 182 meters tall. It rises from an island in the Narmada River near Kevadia and was inaugurated on October 31, 2018, Patel’s birth anniversary.
