🍂 Leaf Raker — By David Zinn in Michigan, USA 🇺🇸

David Zinn’s green character Sluggo lifts the edge of the sidewalk as though it were a rug, ready to rake real fallen leaves underneath. The curled paving and rake are drawn; the leaves are part of the surroundings. In a 2010 interview with AnnArbor.com, Zinn recalled stopping to draw this leaf-raking idea around a pavement crack when he should have been working. He improvises these temporary scenes on location using chalk, charcoal and found objects.

💡 Nerd Fact: Zinn spent more than twenty years working for commercial clients. His commissions included theatre posters, educational cartoons and hand-painted dump trucks; his personal experiments also used cake icing and snow.

🐙 Street Octopus — By Lumen Street Theatre in Limerick, Ireland 🇮🇪

A roadside bollard becomes the head of a blue octopus, while its tentacles spread across the cobbles and pavement. Lumen Street Theatre created the piece for a scavenger hunt in Limerick. The group’s painted bollards along Honan’s Quay also appear in local councillor Elisa O’Donovan’s video from the waterfront. Photo by James Gammell.

💡 Nerd Fact: Lumen Street Theatre also organises Samhain, Limerick’s Hallowe’en festival, which focuses on local heritage and the city’s medieval quarter. Its programme has included storytelling, lantern-making and mask-making workshops, and a Fire and Shadows parade.

🥋 Bruce Lee’s Kick — By Oakoak in Saint-Étienne, France 🇫🇷

Oakoak places Bruce Lee in a yellow tracksuit beside a bent metal railing. His outstretched foot meets the damaged bar so neatly that the railing looks like the result of one powerful kick. The railing intervention was documented in Saint-Étienne in March 2014.

🐸 Giant Frogs — By WKA in Wangon, Indonesia 🇮🇩

WKA fills a roadside wall in Wangon with wide-eyed purple, yellow and green frogs. A person standing beside the mural reveals their scale, while white flower shapes fill the gaps. The close-up brings one especially bewildered face right up to the viewer.

🍟 French Fry Girl — By Tom Bob in New Bedford, Massachusetts, USA 🇺🇸

Yellow parking wheel stops become oversized French fries in Tom Bob’s French Fry Girl. His original post, shared on July 20, 2020, places the work at 1637 Acushnet Avenue in New Bedford. The painted girl already has one fry in her mouth and another on her fork. More wait on the ground, right where a driver would normally stop. In the same caption, Tom Bob thanks Jose Matos and Love The Ave.

🎮 Sonic at the Roundabout — By Pappas Pärlor in Sweden 🇸🇪

Sonic joins the white arrows on a blue roundabout sign. His red shoes and running pose make the circular route look like a ready-made racetrack. Video games are a major inspiration for Pappas Pärlor: Karlgren ran a video-game store before returning to art.

💡 Nerd Fact: In a 2018 interview with URBAN NATION, Karlgren said he preferred small projects using no more than 90 beads, which he could finish in two minutes. He had also tried cross-stitch but found it too time-consuming.

🟢 A Real-Life Pipe Exit — By Pappas Pärlor in Sweden 🇸🇪

A little fuse-bead Mario pokes his head out of a real green pipe. The brick wall and worn metal supply the setting; Pappas Pärlor adds just enough of the character to make the pipe look like a way out of a video game. Behind the name is Swedish artist Johan Karlgren, who began making bead art with his children.

👀 Earthquake Detection Kit

Two googly eyes sit beneath an official-looking title on a bright yellow sign. That is the entire kit. The tiny warning at the bottom supplies the punchline: if the eyes start moving, leave the building.

💡 Nerd Fact: An early earthquake detector was invented in China in AD 132. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, Chang Heng’s seismoscope indicated that an earthquake was occurring but did not produce a recording of the shaking.
