📖 Hans Christian Andersen — By Georg John Lober in New York City, USA 🇺🇸

Four visitors gather around Hans Christian Andersen as if story time has just begun. Unveiled in 1956, Georg John Lober’s bronze sits beside Conservatory Water in Central Park. The open book shows The Ugly Duckling, and a bronze duckling listens at his feet. Here, even the duckling gets an attentive companion.

💡 Nerd Fact: The pretend audience echoes a real tradition: seasonal storytelling has taken place here since 1957. Children also helped fund the monument itself: Danish and American schoolchildren contributed donations alongside the Danish-American women’s association that initiated and largely financed it.

🕊️ VIP Pigeon — By Michael Pederson in Sydney, Australia 🇦🇺

A pigeon stands behind a miniature red rope, beside a sign marked VIP. Michael Pederson shared this tiny exclusive entrance in May 2019, captioning it simply “VIP.” The Sydney steps remain ordinary concrete; the bird gets the special treatment.

💡 Nerd Fact: Pederson started out primarily as a painter. In an interview with Split Lip, he traces his street interventions to a side project around 2013, when he became interested in the surprise of someone discovering a small work in public rather than encountering it in a gallery.

🐈 Oh ! — By Näutil in Réthoville, France 🇫🇷

A blue eye, pink nose and long white whiskers spread across a concrete bunker. Näutil created Oh ! in Réthoville in 2018, fitting the cat’s face to the rough structure. Coastal grasses brush across the foreground, making the bunker look as though it has settled down for a quiet watch.

💡 Nerd Fact: Bunkers were among Näutil’s earliest painting surfaces, not just a later choice for this cat. His biography places his first bunker graffiti before his move to Paris in the late 1990s, after a childhood shaped by the sea, skateboarding and surfing.

🌧️ Rain Swing — By Golsa Golchini in Milan, Italy 🇮🇹

A small girl swings below a railing, with long water stains supplying the ropes. Golsa Golchini adds the seat, white dress and flowing hair to this Milan wall.

💡 Nerd Fact: Golchini’s training covered much more than painting. Her gallery Winarts records studies in photography, sculpture, decoration and fresco at Milan’s Brera Academy between 2004 and 2010, when she graduated in visual arts.

👁️ An Eye on the Street — By HEROK in Balneário Rincão, Brazil 🇧🇷

A giant eye fills the side of a construction dumpster, with painted lashes crossing the metal. HEROK made the work in Balneário Rincão. The container’s angular shape remains visible around the eye.

💡 Nerd Fact: HEROK’s public work also includes a tribute to local fishing traditions. For a separate project in Balneário Camboriú, Coral credits Ricardo Herok with Sábio dos mares, a fisherman holding a mullet as a tribute to the neighborhood’s traditional fishing.

😁 Toothyman — By Nikita Nomerz in Yekaterinburg, Russia 🇷🇺

Two eyes and a nose turn this worn yellow wall into Toothyman. Nikita Nomerz uses the broken masonry along its base as a mouth full of uneven teeth. A 2012 RFE/RL report identifies the work in Yekaterinburg and dates it to 2011.

💡 Nerd Fact: Nomerz was giving trees characters before this wall was painted. RFE/RL’s photo record dates his Woodman in Nizhny Novgorod to 2010 and identifies it as part of The Trees, alongside his better-known Living Wall project.

🟢 Yoda on the Wall — By Caer8th in Prague, Czech Republic 🇨🇿

Yoda’s green face rises between silver graffiti letters, with wisps of white hair standing out against the dark wall. Caer8th painted the character in Prague.

💡 Nerd Fact: Lucasfilm’s official databank lists Yoda’s species as unknown and says that he trained Jedi for more than 800 years.

🌱 Alive for 59 Days — By Michael Pederson in Sydney, Australia 🇦🇺

A weed gets a blue sign reading “ALIVE FOR 59 DAYS” and a tiny ladder reaching the counter. Michael Pederson shared the installation under the caption “Alive” in July 2018. The ladder makes it easy to imagine someone arriving tomorrow to change the number.

💡 Nerd Fact: Pederson once thought a passerby was about to object to a miniature installation. He told Split Lip that a mother approached with her two children—but she was curious and wanted them to meet the artist before he left.
