Nine street art favorites, from a fox breaking free to a woman emerging from roots.

A giant fox climbs through brickwork. A straw bird towers over a child. Roots become a woman, beach stones seem to flow, and a rider in a red veil fills a building’s end wall. These nine reader favorites bring together murals, sculptures, and land art with very different ideas of scale.

🦊 “Dzimuši brīvībai” — By Aleksandrs and Oļegs Marinohs in Riga, Latvia 🇱🇻

A giant black fox seems to climb out through the brickwork, its tail curled over the wall behind it. Aleksandrs and Oļegs Marinohs created the sculpture with Dzīvnieku brīvība to speak up for animals confined on industrial farms.

💡 Nerd Fact: More than 100 volunteers wove the fox’s coat from metal wire and hemp cord.

🪽 “Ho-oh” — Wara Art Festival in Niigata, Japan 🇯🇵

A child stands beneath the straw bird’s outstretched wings, making its enormous scale immediately clear. For the 2021 Wara Art Festival, Musashino Art University students designed Ho-oh remotely. Local volunteers built it at Uwasekigata Park, weaving rice straw around a wooden frame.

🌿 “The Tree and Me” — By Debra Bernier on Vancouver Island, Canada 🇨🇦

With her eyes closed and both hands over her heart, Debra Bernier’s figure seems to grow straight out of the mossy bank. Twisting roots become hair and body, joining the sculpture to the forest around it.

🌊 “Fluidus” — By Jon Foreman at Freshwater West, Wales 🇬🇧

Rows of colored stones sweep across the sand, shrinking from a broad rounded edge into fine, curling trails. Jon Foreman made Fluidus at Freshwater West in 2022. His careful spacing makes solid pebbles look as though they are flowing, while his crouching figure gives the whole arrangement a sense of scale.

🕸️ “Hilandera” — By Pejac in Salamanca, Spain 🇪🇸

A painted woman handles a line that opens into a giant spiderweb across the wall. A small bird sits above it. Pejac’s Hilandera dates from 2010; the bare gray surface lets the thin black lines carry the entire scene.

🌇 “Shauquethqueat’s Eutrochium” — By Mona Caron in Jersey City, New Jersey, USA 🇺🇸

Joe Pye weed grows to the scale of a tower in Mona Caron’s Jersey City mural. Its reddish stems and clusters of pink flowers climb the dark façade, with the sunset echoing their color. The plant is native to the area; Caron painted this version on Cottage Street in 2021.

💡 Nerd Fact: Caron’s project record gives the mural a painted area of 23,100 square feet across 23 floors. Its title uses Shauquethqueat, the transcribed Mohican name of a documented nineteenth-century healer associated with Joe Pye weed.

🐍 Mi eterno pecado — By SEPC in Manizales, Colombia 🇨🇴

A blue face fills the corner wall, while orange markings follow the brow and cheeks. SEPC places a paintbrush in the figure’s hand and a snake beside it, keeping the small objects visible against the much larger portrait.

🐎 VENUS TACARIGUA — By Cris Herrera in Valencia, Venezuela 🇻🇪

A rider and a pale horse occupy almost the entire end wall, with the people below giving a sense of their size. Cris Herrera painted VENUS TACARIGUA for Ciudad Mural in Valencia. The rider wears a red veil and a skirt patterned with skulls.

🌀 Incline Spiral — By Jon Foreman at Sandy Haven, Wales, UK 🇬🇧

Large red stones stand on edge while smaller pebbles fill the spaces around the spiral. Jon Foreman made Incline Spiral at Sandy Haven on 19 May 2025, arranging the stones by hand. His crouching figure shows how far the pattern spreads across the beach.
