🌀 “Rubra Spiralis” — By Jon Foreman at Sandy Haven Beach, Pembrokeshire, Wales 🇬🇧

Foreman says he made Rubra Spiralis over two days in 2024 at Sandy Haven Beach. He wrote that the tide did not quite reach it, so he had extra time to work on the expanding spiral of red stones.

🕶️ Bougainvillea Shades — Artist Unconfirmed in Pondicherry, India 🇮🇳

A 2018 India Cultural Hub post credits Kanthan’s photograph and places the wall on Petit Canal Street in Pondicherry. The painted face and blue sunglasses sit beneath a real bougainvillea, whose branches become the portrait’s hair and change color and shape as the plant grows.

💡 Pigment Fact: The magenta bracts of some bougainvilleas get their color from betalains rather than the anthocyanins more typical of flowering plants. A University of Oxford botanical profile notes that betalains also occur in other members of the same plant order, including beetroot, cacti, and ice plants.

🌲 Popeye’s Spinach — By Semi O.K in Kocaeli, Turkey 🇹🇷

Semi O.K painted Popeye’s spinach can beneath a real tree, making the foliage look like spinach bursting from it. The artist shared the finished work in a January 5, 2020 post.

💡 Popeye Fact: The common story that Popeye ate spinach because of a misplaced decimal point in an iron analysis is itself a myth. McGill University’s review notes that creator E. C. Segar instead linked spinach to vitamin A in a 1932 strip. Spinach contains beta-carotene, which the body converts into vitamin A.

🍎 “The Little Girl and the Little Apple Tree” — By Oakoak in France 🇫🇷

A real branch with red berries hangs above Oakoak’s tiny painted girl. In his original October 2016 post, he calls it The Little Girl and the Little Apple Tree; his official archive places it in France. At the painted girl’s scale, the berries become her apple crop.

🍲 “Possum Leaf Wizard” — By David Zinn in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA 🇺🇸

A leaf-filled hole sits at the center of David Zinn’s sidewalk scene. His official shop page identifies the work as Possum Leaf Wizard and dates the chalk-and-charcoal drawing to Ann Arbor in October 2024. In Zinn’s story, Hannah has brewed last year’s leaves into a stew to sustain everyone until spring.

💡 Winter Fact: Virginia opossums do not hibernate. According to the University of Michigan’s Animal Diversity Web, they become less active in bitter cold and fill their dens with materials such as dry leaves or shredded paper.

🌱 “Pom Pom Girl” — By Sandrine Estrade Boulet

In her own archive, Boulet titles the image Pom Pom Girl. The Guardian describes her process as photographing ordinary street details and reworking them on a computer. Here, two clumps of grass become pom-poms for an illustrated cheerleader.

💡 Print Fact: Boulet also issued the image as a signed, numbered lenticular postcard in an edition of 50.

👟 Keeping the Feet Warm — From a College Chalk Art Project in the Philippines 🇵🇭

According to a 2012 Street Art Utopia post, this was part of a chalk art project by college students in the Philippines. The students used the bent pipes as legs, adding striped socks, sneakers, and loose laces across the pipes and pavement.

🪨 “Cairn” — By Celeste Roberge at the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno, Nevada, USA 🇺🇸

The Nevada Museum of Art’s collection record lists Cairn as a 1998 work in steel and river rock. TAI Modern identifies the materials as anodized steel and hand-selected river rock from the Truckee River, and describes Cairn as a site-specific sculpture created for the museum. It lists the work at the front entrance.

💡 Title Fact: The sculpture is widely shared online as “The Weight of Grief,” but the Nevada Museum of Art records its title as Cairn.

🍇 Berry Workers — By Oakoak in Avignon, France 🇫🇷

Oakoak added a tiny crew among the dark berries of a climbing vine. At their scale, each berry looks like heavy cargo in a miniature harvest scene.
