Perspective, scale and architecture make flat walls appear to open, pavement fill with water and whole buildings change shape. Some of these illusions only work from one exact angle.

🎻 “A Violonchelista de Fene” — By SFHIR in Fene, Spain 🇪🇸

At Rúa da Fraga 64, the mural spans two apartment façades and the narrow stairwell between them. The cellist covers the outer walls, while the stairwell forms the cello’s long neck.

💡 Nerd Fact: On 5 November 2024, Spain’s postal service issued a €4.60 Urban Art miniature-sheet stamp featuring the mural. Correos lists offset printing on coated, gummed, phosphorescent paper.

🌳 Floating Tree Illusion — By Daniel Siering & Mario Shu in Potsdam, Germany 🇩🇪

Daniel Siering and Mario Shu wrapped part of the trunk in foil sheeting and spray-painted the view behind it. A video of the work shows the painted band lining up with the road and horizon from one position, so the tree’s middle seems to disappear.

💡 Nerd Fact: In 2011, local reporting described Siering as a trained carpenter who had used spray paint since his teens. The 14-person Potsdam firm where he worked had already completed about 600 works in Brandenburg.

🚂 Abandoned Train Carriage — By Odeith in Portugal 🇵🇹

Odeith painted the rear of a weathered passenger train across a box-shaped structure, then continued the carriage along the adjoining wall. His process video shows how the two surfaces line up as one train from the intended viewpoint.

💡 Art Fact: In his original post, Odeith said a pre-existing piece by his longtime painting friend Roteweiller ended up at the far end of the painted train and happened to fit the carriage perfectly.

🐴 “Neustadt 2022” — By Nikolaj Arndt in Neustadt (Hessen), Germany 🇩🇪

A painted pool crosses the path, complete with ripples and reflections. From the right angle, a kneeling woman touches the muzzle of a horse standing chest-deep in water.

💡 Nerd Fact: Wilhelmshaven’s StreetArt Festival records that Arndt has entered international street-painting competitions since 2008. He won its 3D Art category in 2012, 2013 and 2018, plus its audience award in 2012 and 2013.

🏘️ “Calonge. Plaça Major 2014” — By Carles Arola in Calonge, Spain 🇪🇸

At Plaça Major opposite Calonge Castle, the blank façade is filled with painted balconies, a cellar doorway, townspeople, barrels and a horse. The shadows and sightlines make it look much deeper than the real wall.

💡 Local Fact: Arola’s project notes name the painted people as figures from Calonge’s life and history. The artist appears on an upper balcony, while Lluís Galí is shown making espadrilles at street level.

🏙️ “Flatiron Mural” — By Derek Michael Besant in Toronto, Canada 🇨🇦

On the rear of the Gooderham Building at 49 Wellington Street East, a painted canvas seems to peel away from the wall. Curled corners, oversized fasteners, shadows and windows make it look loosely pinned to the building.

💡 Material Fact: Besant’s artist-supplied technical record identifies this as a 1980 City of Toronto commission made with UV epoxy on Alucobond. Its recorded dimensions are 30 by 50 feet by 18 inches.

🧱 Banfield’s 65-Meter-High Mural — By Martín Ron in Banfield, Argentina 🇦🇷

A girl builds—or dismantles—a wall of colored blocks while standing on a metallic heart-shaped balloon. Seen from a distance, the scene covers almost the full height of the residential tower at Belgrano 1529.

💡 Nerd Fact: Clarín reported that the girl is Ailín. Ron photographed her standing on tiptoe at a blackboard during a 2019 barbecue, then replaced the blackboard with interlocking blocks in the mural.

☁️ “Le Chantier Naval Flottant” (“The Floating Shipyard”) — By Sock Wild Sketch & TETAL in La Seyne-sur-Mer, France 🇫🇷

Boats from different eras, aircraft and shipyard machinery drift together inside a port suspended in clouds. Created for MiniFest 2022, the mural is titled “Le chantier naval flottant”. It can be found on Rue Louis Antelme.

💡 Place Fact: According to the city’s history of the yards, more than 1,944 ship hulls were built there between 1856 and 1985. These included dredgers used to excavate the Suez Canal. The yards closed in 1989.

📦 “Box of Imagination” — By Wild Drawing in Cheltenham, England 🇬🇧

At 247 Gloucester Road, a giant figure sits in an open box painted around the building’s corner. A long ribbon continues across the lower wall, while real windows and edges disappear into the scene from the right angle.

💡 Art Fact: In his 2019 caption, Wild Drawing called “Box of Imagination” a tribute to Mœbius, the pen name of French comics artist Jean Giraud.

🛟 “Kit de Secours” (“Emergency Kit”) — By Leon Keer in Plougasnou, France 🇫🇷

At 11 Rue du Grand Large, Leon Keer painted the end wall as a clear package filled with miniature rescue boats. Glossy highlights, crumpled plastic and a painted shadow make it seem attached to the building.

💡 Nerd Fact: Keer said the four toy boats honor coastguard workers. He had admired such rescuers since childhood for heading out to help people without hesitation. The mural later won the 2021 Golden Street-Art award for murals painted in France.
