🪵 “Fearless” — By Debra Bernier of Shaping Spirit on Vancouver Island, Canada 🇨🇦

Debra Bernier follows the grain, curves, and tide-shaped openings of the wood. In Fearless, she shapes the face around what is already there. On her official artist page, Bernier describes herself as a co-creator, working with wood already shaped by earth, ocean, and tides.

💡 Nerd Fact: Bernier links her practice to pareidolia—the tendency to perceive meaningful forms in ambiguous objects. In a 2025 interview, she said she experienced it as a child and later began shaping the faces she imagined in clay and wood.

🐝 Wasp on a Weathered Wall — By Odeith

Odeith’s painted shadow pulls the wasp away from the surface. Grass, vines, moss, and damp stains turn the existing wall into its habitat.

💡 Nerd Fact: Odeith’s official biography says he began experimenting with spray cans on neighborhood walls in Damaia in the mid-1980s, before graffiti gained momentum in Portugal during the 1990s.

🤖 Algorithms of Love — By David Zinn at M.Judson Booksellers in Greenville, South Carolina, USA 🇺🇸

A round metal utility cover becomes the top of the robot’s head, while weeds growing through the pavement become its bouquet. In Zinn’s own post from May 13, 2022, geotagged at M.Judson Booksellers in Greenville, he says the young robot’s thoughts have turned to “algorithms of love.”

📚 Local Fact: The shop’s namesake, Mary Camilla Judson, was the first “Lady Principal” at the Female College in Greenville. She sponsored a debate club for women and used her own savings to help establish the college library.

🌿 “Graceful” — By Falko One in Riebeek West, South Africa 🇿🇦

Falko One painted Graceful for his 2020 After Life exhibition, staged in dilapidated ruins beside the cemetery on the outskirts of Riebeek West. A 2022 Solo Studios preview identifies this image as Graceful. A narrow opening across the portrait’s eyes leaves the real trees behind the wall visible.

💡 Nerd Fact: Riebeek West was also the first stop on Falko One’s Once Upon a Town social art project in 2010. According to a contemporary exhibition notice, he returned ten years later with After Life, his commissioned debut solo exhibition.

🌱 Upfest 2015 Stencil — By Dr Love in Bristol, England 🇬🇧

A barefoot patient in a hospital gown breathes through a mask connected to a potted tree on a cart. The figure, tree trunk, and equipment are stenciled, while a real patch of moss supplies the living crown. Durham University’s Life of Breath exhibition lists it as an Upfest 2015 work by Bacha Khoperia, a.k.a. Dr Love, and notes that it first appeared in Bedminster. Photo by Daz Smith.

💡 Nerd Fact: Dr Love’s stencil practice began on clothing. The Guardian reported during Upfest 2015 that he first made stencils for T-shirts before transferring the method to walls in Tbilisi.

🐦 “Mother Nature” — By WD (Wild Drawing) in Athens, Greece 🇬🇷

WD paints a giant mother bird offering a worm to three chicks. Real vines and leaves make up part of her body and the nest. A 2014 LIFO interview with the artist identifies it as Mother Nature, Athens, 2013.

💡 Nerd Fact: WD says his initials stand for “Wild Drawing,” a name for images growing in the urban jungle. He said in another interview that he started in 2000 with paste-ups, billboards, and stencils before moving on to large murals.

👘 “Oiran and Hollywood Star” — 2013 Rice Paddy Art by Inakadate Village in Aomori, Japan 🇯🇵

This photograph shows the oiran half of Inakadate Village’s 2013 First Venue artwork. A contemporary Aomori Prefectural Government report names the full work Oiran and Hollywood Star; the other half depicted Marilyn Monroe. The field was planted beside Inakadate Village Hall and designed to be viewed from its observation deck.

💡 Nerd Fact: Aomori Tourism says the project began in 1993 to teach visitors about rice farming and agriculture. The first design depicted Mount Iwaki and lettering in purple and yellow rice.

🦊 Patrice in a Plant Hat — By David Zinn

Patrice is drawn into a split in a cut tree stump. Live plants growing through the wood form her hat. In his original post from July 31, 2025, Zinn says she got stuck in a hedge that morning but is still accepting compliments on her hat.

💡 Nerd Fact: Zinn’s official biography says his temporary street drawings are always improvised on location and made entirely from chalk, charcoal, and found objects.

✋ “The Giant Hand of Vyrnwy” — By Simon O’Rourke at Lake Vyrnwy, Powys, Wales 🇬🇧

In 2011, Simon O’Rourke carved the top of a 50-foot (15.2-meter) stump left after a storm-damaged Douglas fir was felled at Lake Vyrnwy. The hand itself measures about 2.25 meters from wrist to fingertip.

💡 Nerd Fact: The hand is not one continuous piece: the stump was too narrow, so O’Rourke added wood for the thumb and little finger. In his account of the commission, O’Rourke says he completed the carving in six days using chainsaws and grinders, then sealed it with plant-based tung oil suitable for use near waterways.
