Skeleton Art (8 Photos)

Skeletons become punchlines, portraits, and public art.
An X-ray skull floats above a London street, a dinosaur stretches across a wall in France, and plastic skeletons in Pennsylvania turn labels and beer into visual jokes.

🏷️ Labels — By ItSkeletal in Fogelsville, Pennsylvania, USA 🇺🇸
Seven plastic skeletons stand beneath the labels “White,” “Black,” “Straight,” “Gay,” “Religious,” “Atheist,” and “Pirate.” The Morning Call reported that this simple display brought Manny Julio’s Fogelsville roadside project a flash of social-media fame. The pirate completes the joke with one lower leg missing.

💡 Nerd Fact: In an interview about the project, Julio said the series began with his vision of a 1950s or early-1960s family living room populated by skeletons. He put the scene out for Halloween as a one-off, but people began asking what would come next.

💡 Nerd Fact: SCAF did not attend art school. He told Bored Panda that he learned in the street and in abandoned factories after a school friend introduced him to graffiti.

🔴 The Architect — By INSANE 51 in Crotone, Italy 🇮🇹
Created for Crotone’s KRIU public-art project, The Architect combines a portrait and a skeleton in overlapping red and cyan layers. Red and cyan lenses reveal the two images separately. The design refers to Pythagoras: its triple-circle halo symbolizes harmony, while a ten-point Tetractys refers to cosmic order. Find it at Via degli Albanesi 2.

💡 Nerd Fact: The Tetractys is a ten-point triangular figure: rows of one, two, three, and four points total ten, the fourth triangular number. The same arrangement is used for bowling pins.

🌺 Frida Kahlo Mural — By Emmanuel Cuevas Visual in Guadalajara, Mexico 🇲🇽
Emmanuel Cuevas Visual combines Frida Kahlo’s portrait with a flower-decorated calavera and anatomical hearts across the façade of La Lupita Cantina at Andador Coronilla 9 in central Guadalajara.

💡 Nerd Fact: Kahlo entered Mexico’s National Preparatory School intending to study medicine and was one of only 35 girls in a student body of 2,000 boys. After her 1925 traffic accident left her bedridden for months, her mother placed a mirror above the bed and her parents had an easel made so she could paint while lying down.

🐦 Untitled (Skeleton and Bird) — By SMUG in Frankston, Victoria, Australia 🇦🇺
SMUG painted this untitled mural on Park Lane for Frankston’s inaugural Big Picture Fest in March 2018. A tiny blue bird perches on the raised finger of a towering skeleton.
More: See 24 Murals by SMUG
💡 Nerd Fact: The festival archive describes SMUG’s mural as the headline commission of the inaugural Big Picture Fest, held from 23–25 March 2018. Street Art Cities now marks the work as removed and reports that the building was demolished.

🍺 Recycle — By ItSkeletal in Fogelsville, Pennsylvania, USA 🇺🇸
In this Fogelsville roadside display, one plastic skeleton tips a mug into its open mouth. The amber stream passes through its rib cage into a second mug below, while another skeleton holds the drinker’s lowered arm.
More: See ItSkeletal’s Skeleton Street Art
💡 Nerd Fact: Despite the display’s plumbing, alcohol is not absorbed mainly through the stomach. An NIH educational review states that about 20 percent is absorbed there and about 80 percent through the upper small intestine.

🎈 Airhead — By SHOK-1 in London, UK 🇬🇧
Painted freehand in spray paint, without tape or masking, for the 2020 London Mural Festival, Airhead turns a skull X-ray into a balloon. SHOK-1 placed the skull against the upper edge like a party balloon caught on a ceiling, while the string crosses the picture’s border to make it appear to float. It was painted on Nile Street in Hackney.
More: See 3 X-Ray Works by SHOK-1
💡 Nerd Fact: SHOK-1 is a self-taught artist with a degree in Applied Chemistry. When Airhead was adapted as a handmade silkscreen, multiple translucent ink layers were needed to reproduce the mural’s X-ray tones.

🔻 Face Behind Plastic — By Madjer Linares in San Vicente, El Salvador 🇸🇻
A red face emerges beneath painted black-and-white folds resembling crumpled plastic.
More: See Madjer Linares’s Post-Graffiti Mural
💡 Nerd Fact: Plastic bags have been a recurring motif in Linares’s murals since 2020. In an interview with El Diario de Hoy, he described placing discarded bags over a model or himself, connecting the material to superficiality, the barriers people project in relationships, and pollution.
