Sometimes one clever move is enough.

A painted squirrel reaches for an oversized hazelnut, a bench becomes an arcade prize, and stones gather into a moon on the beach. These nine works use scale, material, and placement to change the way we see the scene.

🐿️ Squirrel and Hazelnut — By Blesea in Cherbourg, France 🇫🇷

A person holds an oversized hazelnut up to the painted squirrel. From this angle, the animal appears to push through the concrete toward it.

💡 Nerd Fact: Blesea published this Cherbourg work on 16 February 2025 with the caption “Une petite noisette ?” (“A little hazelnut?”). The Manche tourism board notes that the shapes of the sites he finds often inspire his subjects; he is particularly known for painting on wartime bunkers in the Cotentin Peninsula.

🐈 Giant Cat — By LexusOne at 99 Kultury Street in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia 🇷🇺

In late 2021, LexusOne painted this green-eyed cat across the end wall of 99 Kultury Street. Local reporting identifies both the mural and its artist and says it continued the “City—Fairy Tale” project after an eight-year pause.

💡 Nerd Fact: The proposal for the mural came from local residents taking part in the “My Initiative” civic competition; winning proposals could receive grants of up to 100,000 rubles.

🌙 “Moons Motion” — By Jon Foreman at Freshwater West, Pembrokeshire, Wales 🇬🇧

Rows of beach stones taper inward around an empty center. The outer circle remains open on one side, but your eye fills in the gap.

💡 Nerd Fact: In his account of Moons Motion, Foreman dates its creation at Freshwater West to 16 September 2025 and records that rain began just as he finished placing the last stones.

🌈 “Palm Temple” — By Luke Jerram at the University of Bristol, England 🇬🇧

Dichroic panels scatter changing patches of color around the cedar pavilion, while a mirrored floor reflects the dome. Jerram based its form on a spiralling lamella dome, cut in half and placed in parallel like two palms joined in prayer.

💡 Nerd Fact: Suspended at the apex is Jerram’s Extinction Bell, which tolls 150–200 times at random intervals each day. The count represents a 2007 estimate of the number of species lost worldwide in 24 hours; Sky Arts in Italy originally commissioned the pavilion for a television programme marking the 600th anniversary of Brunelleschi’s dome.

☕ “La Guinguette” — By A-Fresco / Patrick Commecy in Brives-Charensac, France 🇫🇷

A narrow end wall becomes a busy blue café through painted windows, shutters, customers, a woman at an upstairs window, and carefully placed shadows. The mural stands at 110 Rue de Charensac, at Avenue Charles Dupuy.

💡 Nerd Fact: The scene includes Joseph Servant, identified by A-Fresco as the founder of Brives-Charensac’s twinning committee in 1987. Other local references include Saturday-night dances, fried food, and “Verveine Authentique.”

🔴 Louis Vuitton x Yayoi Kusama Installation — At Maison Champs-Élysées in Paris, France 🇫🇷

In January 2023, a monumental figure of Yayoi Kusama appeared above Louis Vuitton Maison Champs-Élysées at 101 Avenue des Champs-Élysées, paintbrush in hand, while Kusama’s multicolored dots spread across the façade. The temporary installation accompanied the launch of Louis Vuitton’s 2023 collaboration with Kusama.

💡 Nerd Fact: The 2023 project was the second collaboration between Kusama and Louis Vuitton; their first joint venture took place in 2012.

💀 Ground Skeleton — By Kitt Bennett in Preston, Melbourne, Australia 🇦🇺

Kitt Bennett painted this phone-scrolling skeleton across an open concrete lot in Preston, a suburb of Melbourne. A local street-art archive includes this exact work in Preston; from ground level, only fragments are visible, while the complete figure resolves from above.

💡 Nerd Fact: Bennett uses a paint bucket and roller for his large ground works and a drone to double-check the outline while painting.

🎮 Arcade Grabber — By Banksy on Lower Esplanade, Gorleston-on-Sea, England 🇬🇧

A painted arcade claw hangs over a real seafront bench. Anyone sitting there becomes the prize.

💡 Nerd Fact: Banksy confirmed the work in his official A Great British Spraycation video. Within days, six teddy bears attributed to local artist Emo appeared beneath the claw; red paint later crossed out “Emo” and replaced it with “Ego”. Great Yarmouth Borough Council then installed a clear protective panel over the work.

🟡 “Penetrable” (1990) — By Jesús Rafael Soto, shown in Austin, Texas, USA 🇺🇸

Yellow plastic hoses hang from a grid of painted iron and aluminum. Visitors move through the sculpture, becoming surrounded by the work as the hoses bend and sway.

💡 Nerd Fact: In a curatorial text published by the Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros, Soto is recorded as having once dreamed of a work capable of absorbing the entire planet. This 1990 installation measures 508 centimetres in each direction.
