8 Street Art Masterpieces That Will Make You Fall in Love with Books Again

A book can change a place before anyone even opens it.

In this collection, a university staircase becomes a reading list, half a fishing boat becomes a book exchange, and a tiny three-wheeled library carries stories through villages in southern Italy.

📚 Staircase of Knowledge — At the University of Balamand, Lebanon 🇱🇧

At the University of Balamand’s main campus, a stairway beside the Issam Fares Library Learning Center becomes a reading list you can climb. The961 says the university library created the initiative, arranging 21 works in almost chronological order from bottom to top.

💡 Book Nerd Fact: The sequence is only “almost” chronological. Amin Maalouf’s Les Désorientés, published in 2012, appears immediately before Bill Gates’s The Road Ahead, published in 1995. The final two steps reverse their publication order.

🕊️ I HAVE A DREAM — By BANE & Pest at Schulhaus Lachen in Chur, Switzerland 🇨🇭

Illuminated letters and a huge bird rise from an open book, with a child riding between the bird’s wings. Porta Cultura Graubünden dates the mural to 2015 and places it on the outer wall of Schulhaus Lachen, close to the neighborhood where BANE grew up. BANE’s own post credits Pest as his collaborator.

💡 Nerd Fact: Porta Cultura Graubünden identifies two references in the title: Martin Luther King Jr.’s 1963 “I Have a Dream” speech and ABBA’s song of the same name. The ABBA recording featured a choir of schoolchildren.

📖 Designer Book Benches — By OverHertz in Bulgaria 🇧🇬

These white fiberglass benches turn open books into public seating, with printed text across their curved “pages.” OverHertz, the Bulgarian company behind the design, says each bench could be customized for outdoor spaces, schools, museums, and libraries.

💡 Design Nerd Fact: The photo has repeatedly been misidentified as a park in Eskişehir, Turkey. Anadolu’s fact-check traced it to Bulgaria and noted that the text on the benches is in Cyrillic.

🌳 L’arbre à livres (The Book Tree) — By SETH at Ma Led Phan Library in Nong Khiaw, Laos 🇱🇦

On the wall of Ma Led Phan Library, a painted girl reads while a real child mirrors her pose on the step below. In his post about the finished mural, SETH places it at the elementary-school library run by NK Seeds. He also describes an afternoon with the children that included a drawing-and-painting workshop on one of the library walls.

💡 Library Nerd Fact: NK Seeds says the library grew out of five years of English teaching in Nong Khiaw. The organization works with Big Brother Mouse and My Library to provide books for different age groups and has developed English–Lao vocabulary books that students can borrow and take home.

⛵ Librarca (The Boat Library) — At Cala Portalga in Polignano a Mare, Italy 🇮🇹

One half of an old wooden fishing boat faces the Adriatic, with three shelves fitted into its hull. The words along the bottom read Prendi un libro, lascia un libro—take a book, leave a book.

💡 Book Nerd Fact: La Repubblica reported in 2021 that the vessel was the nearly 60-year-old gozzo di Carlino, named after its owner. Local fishermen divided it in two: one half housed a nativity scene, while the other became this three-shelf book exchange, which held about 100 volumes at the time.

🧱 Life is an Open Book — By Brad Spencer at The Green in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA 🇺🇸

At The Green, the open book and its four climbing children are sculpted from brick. The gap between the covers is large enough for a child to step inside the work.

💡 Public Art Nerd Fact: ArtWalks CLT dates the work to 2002 and records that it was commissioned to introduce The Green’s reading and literary-arts theme. The park was developed by the former Wachovia Bank and connects Tryon and College streets.

🚚 Il Bibliomotocarro — Antonio La Cava’s Mobile Library in Basilicata, Italy 🇮🇹

Antonio La Cava began driving this pale-blue mobile library through small communities across Basilicata in 1999, while he was still working as a primary-school teacher. Children could borrow books and return them on a later visit. Piaggio identifies it as an Ape Car 500, converted with six two-meter shelves and a rear screen for short films inspired by books.

💡 Library Nerd Fact: La Cava also circulates “white books” between towns: one child begins a story and a child elsewhere may continue it. He describes the practice as an itinerant writing workshop in a 2025 Reuters interview.

📚 Bookcase Mural — By JanIsDeMan in The Hague, the Netherlands 🇳🇱

The mural covers an apartment block at the corner of Spilstraat and Noordpolderkade in Molenwijk, Laak. JanIsDeMan filled its painted shelves with favorite books chosen by children from the neighborhood.

💡 Book Nerd Fact: The mural includes De schoen van 10 miljoen, a collection of stories by ten writers inspired by children’s experiences with money worries, according to housing association Staedion. It was unveiled with pupils from three local primary schools on April 16, 2024.
