Snow Days Got Strange (8 Photos)

By Vidar
A snowman doing a headstand beside a huge steam locomotive carved from snow in Harbin.

A wheelbarrow full of snow babies. A hairdryer hold-up. A train that cannot leave.

Someone put boots on a snowman and turned it upside down. Someone else gave one a wheelbarrow full of passengers. These eight snow scenes turn ordinary props and familiar poses into little stories—with a snow-built steam locomotive waiting at the end.

A huge steam locomotive carved from snow in Harbin, with a visitor standing beside its wheels for scale.

🚂 The Train Stays Here — Harbin, China 🇨🇳

Look at the person beside the front of the engine. The boiler, chimney and enormous wheels make this a much bigger snow project than the backyard scenes above. This one stood at the Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival in January 2009, complete with rows of carved studs on the boiler front.

💡 Festival Fact: The festival was first celebrated in 1985. It was inspired by Heilongjiang’s traditional lanterns, which were carved out of ice and lit with candles.

A snow figure in a patterned headscarf holds a wheelbarrow packed with tiny snow figures among bare trees.

🛒 Everyone In

A real wheelbarrow becomes a very crowded pram. The small snow passengers have their own pointed noses and twig arms, while the larger figure grips the handles with mittens. A patterned scarf and a sweep of straw-like hair finish the scene.

A masked snowman points a hairdryer at another snowman with raised branch arms.

💨 Nobody Move

The weapon is a hairdryer. One snowman aims it; the other has both branch arms raised. With a mask, two hats and one household appliance, the scene needs very little explanation.

An upside-down snowman with brown boots in the air and its face pressed into the snow.

🙃 Boots First

The boots give it away before the face does. This snowman has planted its head in the snow, leaving two straight legs pointing up. The familiar carrot nose ends up almost at ground level.

Rounded snow creatures with blue, purple and white glowing eyes stand in a snowy field at dusk.

👀 The Snow Is Looking Back

From a distance, they could be ordinary piles of snow. Then the blue, purple and white eyes appear. The nearest creature fills the foreground while smaller glowing faces wait farther back in the darkening field.

A snowman in black sneakers slides head-first off a wooden pallet bench, a black flowerpot on its head and empty bottles in the snow around it.

🥾 After the Party

This bench has a less composed visitor. Black sneakers stick into the air, the snowy body slides head-first off the seat, and a black flowerpot sits on the head like a hat. A gloved hand still holds a bottle, with more empties in the snow below.

A snow bust with leaf eyes and lips, a crown of dry vines and a rosebud lying across its body.

🌹 A Different Kind of Snow Face

A quieter stop between the jokes: leaves shape the eyes and lips of this snow portrait, while dry vines curl over the head and around the shoulders. A single rosebud on a leafy stem lies across the body.

A long-limbed smiling snowman sits upright on a wooden park bench.

🪑 Just Taking a Break

Instead of the usual stack of snowballs, this figure has bent knees and long arms curved across its lap. Its upright posture makes it look like another person who stopped to sit down—until you notice the snow.
